Planning for the Future – Facilities Needs Update

Hesperia Unified School District serves and educates over 23,000 children in the city of Hesperia and adjacent areas in the high desert of San Bernardino County. At HUSD, we are committed to providing a distinguished and challenging learning environment that ensures excellence and achievement for all our students.

Looking to the future, HUSD is closely examining school facility needs to ensure all our students have a safe and up-to-date learning environment. While our newer schools were built in 2009 to keep up with a growing student population, over half of our schools are over 30 years old – with the oldest school constructed over 60 years ago in 1958. Many classrooms and schools must be upgraded since they do not meet 21st-century education, technology, and safety standards.

While the outside of our schools look well maintained, our classrooms, labs and school libraries need to be updated to support academic standards. It is clear that the identified scope of need in our schools exceeds our current budget.

It is clear that the identified scope of need in our schools exceeds our current budget.

What has been the process of identifying needs in our schools?
Over several months with input from staff, teachers, parents, community leaders, and an architect, HUSD has prepared a School Facilities Needs Analysis. The Needs Analysis identifies the major repairs and upgrades that need to be made.

Specific types of projects identified include:

  • Making health, safety, security and handicapped accessibility improvements
  • Renovating and improving career training facilities
  • Updating and expanding career technical education classrooms for better-paying jobs
  • Repairing or replacing leaky roofs and outdated heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems
  • Constructing or renovating science, technology, engineering and math labs
  • Modernizing and renovating outdated classrooms, restrooms, and school facilities

Why can’t HUSD meet its facilities needs with its current budget?
Today, the scope of improvements needed at HUSD is far more than the current funding sources available. The per pupil funding which HUSD receives from the state is intended to be used for the day-to-day business of educating children and not the cost of upgrading, modernizing and repairing facilities.
