MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT May 28, 2021
This message is from Dave Olney, Superintendent of the Hesperia Unified School District.
I again want to thank all of you for your support and understanding during this challenging year. And, I want to give a quick shout-out to the Class of 2021; it was wonderful to see you walking across the stage this week to receive your diplomas.
As the governor is expected to lift the COVID tier system on June 15, and many of the restrictions imposed by the Department of Public Health are being removed, I am pleased to announce that we are planning on all schools being fully open next August. There may still be some state requirements, such as face masks, and we will continue to maintain our more stringent cleaning protocols, and emphasize handwashing and basic safety standards. We will continue to keep you informed of any additional changes that occur.
I also want to share with you that a little over a year ago, the state of California passed Senate Bill 328, referred to as the late start bill. This legislation was passed based on the significant amount of research pertaining to the developmental sleep and health needs of adolescents. The bill mandates that by the 2022-23 school year, no middle school schedule may start before 8:00 am and no high school may start before 8:30 am. Elementary schools are not affected by this new law.
As we have just experienced an unpredictable year due to the pandemic, rather than going back to our old middle school and high school start times next year and then changing again the following, we are proposing making the change this next school year, with our middle schools starting at 8:00 am and our high schools, to accommodate transportation needs, starting at 8:45 am. The law allows us to open our campuses earlier to offer before school practices and support so we are in the process of examining different options to accommodate those families who drop off their children before going in to work in the morning.
A short survey has been sent to all of our families to gather input regarding this proposed early adoption and we will be discussing this further at our June 7th board meeting. Please provide any input or suggestions you may have. Regardless of when this new law is implemented, we want to make sure that we are best serving our community.

Nuevamente deseo agradecerles a todos por su apoyo y comprensión durante este año difícil; y, rápidamente quiero reconocer a la Generación 2021; fue maravilloso verlos pasar al estrado esta semana para recibir sus certificados de preparatoria.
Ya que se espera que el gobernador retire el sistema por niveles del COVID el 15 de junio, y con esto muchas de las restricciones exigidas por el Departamento de salud pública serán removidas, me complace en anunciarles que estamos planeando que todas las escuelas vuelvan a abrir completamente el próximo agosto. Es posible que continuemos manteniendo algunos requisitos estatales, como el uso de cubrebocas; y seguiremos con nuestros estrictos protocolos de limpieza y enfatizando en el lavado de manos y los estándares básicos de seguridad. Continuaremos manteniéndolos informados sobre cualquier cambio adicional que ocurra.
También quiero compartirles que hace poco más de un año, el estado de California aprobó el Proyecto de ley 328, conocido como la propuesta de ley para iniciar tarde. Esta legislación fue aprobada a partir de la importante cantidad de investigaciones relacionadas con las necesidades para el desarrollo de adolescentes de sueño y salud.
Dado que acabamos de pasar por un año impredecible debido a la pandemia, en lugar de regresar a nuestros horarios anteriores de entrada para las secundarias y preparatorias el próximo año y después volver a cambiar los horarios un año después, estamos proponiendo hacer el cambio este próximo ciclo escolar en el cual las secundarias, o middle schools, empezarán a las 8:00 a.m. Para ajustarnos a las necesidades de transporte, las preparatorias empezarán a las 8:45 a.m. La ley nos permite abrir nuestros planteles más temprano para ofrecer prácticas y apoyo antes de clases, por lo que estamos en el proceso de examinar diferentes opciones para adaptarnos a esas familias que dejan a sus hijos en la escuela por la mañana antes de irse a trabajar.
Hemos mandado una pequeña encuesta para obtener comentarios de todas nuestras familias sobre esta propuesta de adopción de horario temprano y estaremos tratando esto más a fondo en nuestra junta de la mesa directiva el 7 de junio. Por favor, denos cualquier comentario o sugerencia que puedan tener. Independientemente de cuándo se implemente esta ley nueva, queremos asegurarnos de darle el mejor servicio a nuestra comunidad.
